Policy - General

Through Defra, the Government has set Operating Authorities (District, Borough & Unitary Councils and the Environment Agency) a series of 'High Level Targets' in respect of flood and coastal defence. Target 1 refers to publishing Policy Statements. All of the authorities concerned within the South Downs area have published such statements - where currently available in digital format they have been added here (as links) on the Members page.

The Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the body responsible for setting national policy in respect of Flood and Coastal Defence. Guidance is available on a range of matters e.g. Scheme Appraisal, Sea Level Rise and the Environment.

Defra has recently announced the transfer of operational matters to the Environment Agency. Various documents and guidance are available

Guidance on Development Control in the form of Planning Policy Guidance is available from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in respect of developing on the coast or in areas of flood risk.
