The project also saw the setting up of a baseline of survey markers, at approximately 300m intervals
along the coast, to assist in providing 'control' for air surveys and to regularise all future
coastal surveying. An offshore monitoring station was also established to gather and send the various
data back to shore by radio. Sadly, this particular part of the has not yet produced worthwhile data
although it is planned to make the gathering of meteorological and tidal information an integral
part of the Southeast Regional Monitoring Project.

Above is one of the markers being surveyed to establish its value, using GPS, to the National Grid. Where
possible, the markers were set on existing features. However, in areas where no fixed posiitons
existed, such as the Climping sand dunes (above) dedicated 'monuments' were constructed.
The tide and met. station is situated appox 3.7km off Rustington, on the 5m Chart Datum contour.
