The RIVER OUSE to SEAFORD HEAD COASTAL DEFENCE STRATGEY
Draft Strategy and Environmental Report

The Environment Agency has produced The River Ouse to Seaford Head Coastal Defence Strategy; this is a strategic assessment of flood risk covering the River Ouse downstream of Lewes and the coastline between Newhaven and Seaford. Your views on the Draft Strategy and Environmental Report, will be welcomed; both documents are available for comment until 19th January 2006.

In June 2005 the Agency issued a consultation leaflet that outlined the flood risk management options being considered. Since that time technical, economic and environmental assessments have been undertaken of several options. The Agency has now developed a strategy and is seeking your opinion on it.

To view the draft strategy leaflet and the non technical summary of the environmental report please visit the Environment Agency website:- Ouse to Seaford East Head Consultation.

These documents and copies of the Strategic Environmental Assessment are also available at Newhaven Library (Tel: 01273 514468), Seaford Library (Tel: 01323 893420) and Lewes Library (Tel: 01273 474232)

We are seeking your views by 19 January 2006. These should be sent to Richard Hull at address below.

Next steps

The Environment Agency will shortly initiate an adoption procedure which will see the Strategy considered by the Environment Agency's National Review Group; it will then be submitted to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs [Defra] and the Treasury for funding approval. Once these procedures are in place the Strategy can be formally dopted and works can be carried out.

The envisaged works are:

Seaford: continuing with the shingle recycling
Lewes Brooks through to Newhaven: maintain the existing defences
